He's not the first to be sworn in on something other than a bible. I believe it was President Adams who was sworn in on a law book and another representative was sworn in on the Torah. I think our representatives should be sworn in on a book they believe in. Isn't the idea that they will uphold those values they hold dear. I would think swearing in on something they do not believe in would be a bad president for their term of office.
Re this "flap" - I recently heard that the actual swearing in is not on a bible at all. (Certainly when I became a fed there was no bible in my swearing in), but then legislators usually do another little ceremony featuring their holy book of choice. Photo op version, or something.
